According to ESPN's Jacob Wolf, a group funded by Cox Enterprises has purchased an Atlanta franchise in the Overwatch League. This comes shortly after ESPN reported Paris and Guangzhou were to be expansion franchises for the next season of the Overwatch League.

The announcement of an Atlanta franchise means that one Asian, one European and one North American team have joined the Overwatch League as franchises 13 through 15. The league office has expressed its desire to add six new franchises from next season in Asia, Europe and North America.

While not directly owned by Cox, Atlanta would be the second team associated with a major North American telecommunications company. The Philadelphia Fusion are owned by Comcast Spectacor.

The news came during the grand finals weekend for the Overwatch League. The inaugural season finished with a 2-0 series sweep for the London Spitfire over the Philadelphia Fusion on a combined map count of 6-1.

Expansion franchises will have exclusive rights to offer contracts to free agents from September 9 to October 7.
