“After almost two years of operation and making an impact on the French competitive scene, melty eSport Club is now forced to bow out. Industry consolidation and financial outbidding… have led to an explosion of costs related to the development of mentoring and coaching a club with ambitions of European leadership.

Out of respect for the players, coaches, and managing staff, and to give to each and every one the opportunity to continue to shine through competitions and tournaments around the world, we decided to put an end to this adventure, knowing we couldn’t ensure the highest level of support compared to the structures being built and ‘over-funded.’”

News comes after several large-scale interests in esports, including esport investments by the Philadelphia 76ers and Paris Saint-Germain.

In their one-year Overwatch run, melty started strong earning two minor titles and winning the first GosuGamers EU Weekly. Since August, the team has seen mixed results, failing to qualify for the Overwatch Open and DreamHack Winter. Melty closes its doors as the ninth ranked team in Europe according to Gosu.

The final melty Roster was:

  • Jeremy "Hqrdest" Danton (DPS)
  • Nicolas "NiCO" Moret (DPS)
  • Julien "Baud" Robert (Flex)
  • Laurent "DeGuN" Prinderre (Support)
  • Théo "Tek36" Guillebaud (Support)
  • Bo "Badger" Katzenmaier (Tank)

Melty isn't withdrawing from eSports entirely. It will maintain its media outlet which includes esports news and content creation.
