Yet everyone else compared it to his record? I love how you can compare it to his record if it's positive for OW but if it's negative you can't compare it and are toxic, fucking hilarious.

Viewership numbers are viewership numbers. This argument is incredibly pointless, imho. Just watch if you enjoy and don't watch if you do not, comment on the match that was played if you did.

#31

I'm not talking about viewership numbers at all and I agree comparing them to anything else after 3 days is nothing short of dumb but I'm more talking about what Pixelfish said; "doesn't need comparisons to everything" is fucking hilarious since everyone else in the thread compared it to Tyler1's numbers yet because remiska defended his numbers everyone hates him for it? it's called hypocrisy.

if you compare owl positively its ok but if you compare negatively (or rather objectively) than you are toxic and shouldn't be comparing its pretty obvious man...

He does have a point though, unless you speak about OWL positively you get down voted and called negative yet it's perfectly fine to be extremely optimistic and overly positive.

We are not the same person even if you have a hard time believing that there are people who disagree with you and are actually not afraid to speak the truth regardless of how negative or positive it us, then again it's people like you who are scared of the negatives that force people into giving false positives just to make you happy.

People like you are clear hypocrites who only want people around that follow your opinion and it's pathetic mate, this 7 year old nursery attitude on this site is embarrassing and a lot of the people here could do with growing up.

#43

It's not fake positivity, it's legitimate. Who wasn't positive after opening day? Like, c'mon. Take a break from all the comparisons and all the possible negative outcomes and just enjoy the OWL.

#46

Pretty much stating facts that the OWL will be this good and that good and be the best thing since sliced bread before 90% of the information was even public just because YOU wanted it to because YOU love OW is fake positivity and being massively over optimistic, you talked about the league in such glowing terms when you had no information to go by and before you even saw pre-season.

It's fine to really WANT something but you went too far and turned your opinion into a hard belief and if anyone disagreed you called them negative, you're a joke. There's people on this site that wanted OWL to do well yet very few took it as far as you.

(cs go lol and dta tournaments have a lot higher records)

For me this felt like you were comparing OWL to CSGO, LoL and DOTA by saying that these other games are still more successful in terms of viewship than Overwatch.

That was my interpretation anyway, and also in my opinion not toxic because it is an objective fact that is relevant when discussing viewership statistics.

So lets talk about the legitimacy of the 400k. I'm not sure so I'd like to hear what y'all have to say.

Is this a sort of manufactured artificial number because even the world cup and blizzcon don't really pull this number?

Is it meaningful in the long term? or are people mostly tuning in to check out the hype and potentially get their skins?

Where do you think they viewership numbers will settle in at once the season really gets underway? Do you think it'll maintain over 100k?

Personally, I think this might be a bit fluffed up and I would be surprised to see matches in a few weeks consistently maintaining more than 50k with the exception of popular teams or particularly competitive matches.

Also worth mentioning, the teams they decided to show on the first day. Both LA teams and then Seoul and Dallas who are without a doubt the most popular or visible.

#21
wentaway

Frags

Look I'm usually one of the negative/pessimist ones, but just right now they are streaming the re-broadcast and it says 40k, for a non-live event.

I'd say that they could settle at aorund 100k once the novelty goes away with probable peaks for important/trendy matches, and I'd say it might be good.

#25
Pixelfish

I think you're overthinking things.

It did well, and it had a great first day success, it's as simple as that. There was a lot of hype!

Well yesterday on Twitch there were about 240k viewers (before I fell asleep, damn time zone), it's still probably boosted by the novelty of the event, probably would make more sense to check the numbers at the end of week 2?

#29
BigBad
2
Frags
+

I'm sure that's largely true. Nevertheless, I can't help but feel it's a good sign that there are more people watching the re-broadcast from last night than watched a lot of last year's Contenders matches.

#32
KoleeKo
0
Frags

I think the issue is an over saturation of games. Is the casual viewer going to want to watch 4 straight days of overwatch every week for months on end? I hope so. Week 2 will be interesting, I would like to see viewership hover around 200K consistently and rise for the big games, but the trend of the past days say otherwise. Some other factors are lingering, such as blizzard adding rewards for watching twitch and the proof of concept getting more advertisers/resources for the league. Ultimately it’s been really satisfying to see the viewership thus far competing with eleague, it shows the potential is there

#33
LordOfHorns
1
Frags
+

Now the real test is to see how many viewers they can pull in in like, March. If it can maintain 200k, or more, than this will be a total success

#34
robokun87
-2
Frags
+

Wouldn't go that far, in order to consider the OWL a "total success" with the money involved it has to have more than that consistently but most important fill out the arenas for the coming seasons, having 200k viewers average with 10% full arenas will be nowhere near a success. The way to get consistently high viewers is to reward people for watching so it makes sense they did this and now have to keep it up.

#37
Pixelfish
-1
Frags
+

You're actually mostly incorrect about that.

A "success", in most eyes, before opening day, was to reach about 50k viewers. It exceeded all expectations, and if OWL can sustain 150k-200k + viewers every game, and then for Stage Titles and Grand finals reach 500k+, then OWL is unquestionably a success. Factoring in live events doesn't really fully come into play until season 3. Don't forget, there will be rewards for viewers in the future, but if you're disagreeing that we're off to a good start then you're once again being overly pessimistic.

#38
remiska
-1
Frags
+

if 50k was success in your opinion for a league with 30 milion buy in you have no idea what your talking about

500k during final is not good, its TIMES less than lol cs go dota and owl has WAY higher buy in being tier 2 esport is not a success

#39

#42

#44

Never said it was my opinion for a good success? Read more carefully.

And those numbers that I gave for a first season of an untested are fantastic. Stop comparing it to an an established eSport that has built a fanbase for years on end.

#41
robokun87
-2
Frags
+

You trying to tell me the people pumping some 20 million dollars into this league deemed 50k viewers across NA, Asia and Europe a success, you for real? "in most eyes" like who, nobodies like you? don't sit there and tell me all the major players involved in OWL consider 50k a success, these guys didn't make all the millions and billions they did with these laughably low expectations.

I'm not disagreeing with anything about a good or bad start I'm disagreeing that 50k is a success but oh look, now I'm being over pessimistic when someone like you acting liked 50k viewers is a massive success isn't being overly optimistic.

#45
Pixelfish
1
Frags
+

Again, read.

A lot of journalists and players presumed that OWL wouldn't succeed, and it wouldn't reach more than 50k viewers. That wasn't my opinion- I knew the numbers would be great.

50k viewers would've been horrible. But that's what many people thought it would get.

#47
robokun87
-2
Frags
+

Not wanting it to succeed out of spite and saying it won't succeed out of facts are two different things, how many of those players saying that are in the OWL as we speak, none? journalists, do you honestly give two shits what any journalist has to say about anything, do you honestly believe they get paid to talk positively about anything?

You basically listened to players who most likely didn't get a spot and journalists who get paid to talk major shit and trigger people into reading articles. Same journalists who had it down as a failure long before they even knew anything remotely important about the league.

#51
Pixelfish
0
Frags
+

No, I agree with you. Journalists and a lot of players who aren't in OWL are the suspects of those claims, but that's also a large majority of the OW fanbase. Remember the forums, this website, reddit, etc. during our limbo last march? Most people were on the negative side of OWL.

If you looked at the state Overwatch was in first two quarters last year, it's not that difficult of a statement for most.

I completely disagreed with it, but I saw where people were coming from in most eyes, and again, to most, it was reasonable.

ya I see what youre saying I guess I didn't really see many pieces where they viewed 50k as a success, most of the articles I read and videos I saw were viewing hundreds of thousands as a success, especially post OWWC

#60
Pixelfish
-1
Frags
+

Pieces you've read and videos you've watched were obviously less Overwatch-educated, and maybe hadn't been watching the scene for very long. Simply judging during the World Cup is fine, but that's not when people were unsure. People were unsure during February-May where our biggest western tournament was fucking TakeOver 2.
Those writers and content creators are also the smallest portion of the OW community, keep that in mind.

#62
KoleeKo
-1
Frags
+

eh, the amount of money being pumped into the league is unprecedented. Also blizzards strategy was obviously not to build up a fan base gradually before the league started; they held off on a lot of LANs for 2017 to wait and stir up hype for the OWL, and as of right now it is working. But the expectation, given the strategy and money is that Blizzard needed a viewership spike in the eyes of many "Overwatch educated" journalists as you put it

#63
Pixelfish
-1
Frags
+

I agree, the money was unprecedented. Money doesn't always equal success though, which was the basis for a lot of people's arguments.

Fortunately, in this case, it so far has.

#65
KoleeKo
0
Frags
+

Idk money is for sure the measure of success, firstly its the main reason blizzard is in esports, second, you need money to make the league go.. Its why Blizzard asked so much from investors because they needed capital to make a quality product. The part thats hard to control is viewership, which is where you need the funds from advertisers; you cant rmaintain a league of this size on investor money. Noah might be passionate about esports, but people like Robert Kraft are not, and they want a sizeable return on their 20M investment, like any big timer would.

I'm very interested to see what viewing figures look like by week 6/7. I watched every game this week but I'll be cutting way down on the matches that I watch from here on out.
