Ranking of top 20 players in Overwatch in 2017 part 1

10. Profit

South Korea over.gg profile Liquipedia profile

GC Busan
London Spitfire

Results:

  • 1st Overwatch APEX Season 4
  • 1st APAC Premier 2017

While Profit might be considered the best player in the world he did not have much of an impact on the scene as his achievements all came close to the end of the year. Still his contribution to one of the biggest underdog stories in all of overwatch historie with GC Busan defeating Lunatic Hai, Kongdoo Panthera and Runaway in their road to APEX championship can’t be overlooked.

9. birdring

South Korea over.gg profile Liquipedia profile

Team Kongdoo Uncia
Team KongDoo Panthera
Cloud9 KongDoo
London Spitfire

Results:

  • 2nd Overwatch APEX Season 3
  • 2nd Seoul Cup - OGN Super Match
  • 3rd Overwatch APEX Season 4

Looking at results, birdring might come across as one of the least achieved players in this ranking and playing in a region by many considered to be the most competitive as well as low number of tournaments prevented him from lifting a trophy he deserves. But with his undeniable skill on dps he was crucial to his team being considered by many to be one of, if not the best in the world.

8. LiNkzr

Finland over.gg profile Liquipedia profile

Team Dignitas
Arc 6
Ninjas in Pyjamas
Rest in Pyjamas
Team Gigantti
Houston Outlaws

Results:

  • 3rd Overwatch PIT Championship - Europe Season 1
  • 1st Alienware Monthly Melee: May
  • 1st ASUS ROG Tournament 2017 - Summer
  • 1st Overwatch Contenders 2017 Season 1: Europe
  • 1st ASUS ROG Tournament 2017 - GameXpo

Finnish star was one of the most impactful european player in 2017, bringing tremendous firepower on hitscan and genji to every team he played on. While at first his fully finnish adventure with slow paced and known for triple tank composition NiP didn’t work out, with some later adjustments they were able to unleash their potential and with their star dps player popping off win Contenders season 1 against Misfits.

7. uNKOE

France over.gg profile Liquipedia profile

Rogue
Los Angeles Valiant

Results:

  • 1st Alienware Monthly Melee: February
  • 1st Alienware Monthly Melee: March
  • 1st Alienware Monthly Melee: April
  • 1st Overwatch PIT Championship - North America
  • 1st Overwatch Rumble - April
  • 1st Overwatch TaKeOver 2
  • 1st BEAT Invitational - Season 2
  • 4th Overwatch World Cup 2017

uNKOE was alongside akm second most consistent and important player in Rogues performance in 2017. Thanks to rise of dive meta and french support players prowess on Zenyata he became regarded as one of the worlds best support players. His excellent aim helped him turn tides of many games in french mans favour and with how strong dive was uNKOE didn’t need to play many other heroes, still his ana is amongst the best in the world.

6. EFFECT

South Korea over.gg profile Liquipedia profile

Meta Bellum
EnVyUs
Dallas Fuel

Results:

  • 4th Overwatch APEX Season 3
  • 1st Overwatch Contenders 2017 Season 1: North America

EFFECT was a well known and regarded player on Korean ladder for some time but he did not play in a top team until the end of april when he joined western team EnVyUs immediately proving his worth with one of the most impressive tracer play we have seen. He continued to impress throughout rest of the year as even with envyus not playing dive making flankers role much harder he was able to get crucial picks and win one on one against every tracer player in the world.

5. aKm

France over.ff profile Liquipedia profile

Rogue

Results:

  • 1st Alienware Monthly Melee: February
  • 1st Alienware Monthly Melee: March
  • 1st Alienware Monthly Melee: April
  • 1st Overwatch PIT Championship - North America
  • 1st Overwatch Rumble - April
  • 1st Overwatch TaKeOver 2
  • 1st BEAT Invitational - Season 2
  • 4th Overwatch World Cup 2017

The star player and one of the reasons for Rogues domination in the west aKm was teams soldier player and with meta being kind to his pocket pick we didn’t need to see much of other heroes from him, This said his occasional Pharra Mccree and Widow play was just as scary. While fully french Rogue debut in Korea didn’t go well it could be noticed that Korean teams identified him as the biggest threat and focused on him. With many top players picking him as one of the best players his absence from initial Overwatch League pick ups.

4. chipshajen

Sweden over.gg profile Liquipedia profile

EnVyUs
Dallas Fuel

Results:

  • 2nd Overwatch Rumble - April
  • 4th Overwatch APEX Season 3
  • 1st Overwatch Contenders 2017 Season 1: North America
  • 3rd Overwatch World Cup 2017

Chipshajen was a vital part of EnVyUs success since the creation of this squad. While not as flashy as many other Ana players his superb positioning and ability to keep crucial players alive made him one of the very best support players in the game. After Ana fell out off meta he adapted to new meta better than many other players playing heroes such as Zenyata and Sombra.

3. tobi

South Korea over.gg profile Liquipedia profile

Lunatic Hai
Seoul Dynasty

Results:

  • 1st Overwatch APEX Season 2
  • 1st Overwatch APEX Season 3
  • 1st Seoul Cup - OGN Super Match
  • 1st Overwatch World Cup 2017

Tobi is the less noticed of the Lunatic Hai’s support duo but he shouldn’t be overlooked. His Lúcio is one of the most impactful in the game and his Zenyata is at equally high level. On the other side of the spectrum his pocket pick of Torbjörn surprised and baffled enemies on more than one occasion tilting the balance in favore of Korean squad.

2. Ryujehong

South Korea over.gg profile Liquipedia profile

Lunatic Hai
Seoul Dynasty

Results:

  • 1st Overwatch APEX Season 2
  • 1st Overwatch APEX Season 3
  • 1st Seoul Cup - OGN Super Match
  • 1st Overwatch World Cup 2017

THE Ana player, Ryujehong is one of the best known and universally acclaimed pros in all of overwatch famous for his incredible sleep darts and amazing aim he was instrumental to Lunatic Hais dominance in 2017. Unluckily for South Korean star Ana fell out of meta and while his Zenyata is also impressive it was nowhere near as impressive and in the later part of the year his impact has declined.

1. zunba

South Korea over.gg profile Liquipedia profile

Lunatic Hai
Seoul Dynasty

Results:

  • 1st Overwatch APEX Season 2
  • 1st Overwatch APEX Season 3
  • 1st Seoul Cup - OGN Super Match
  • 1st Overwatch World Cup 2017

Zunba is widely regarded as one of the best Zarya players in the world but with her fall out of the meta he had to switch to DV.a as well as occasionally pick up soldier 76 but no matter the hero or meta he was an instrumental player to Lunatic Hai’s success. His always solid performance and ability to adjust even better than other top players to changing meta made him the best player in 2017.

(i run out of characters in the post so i put it here)
As i already had people comment on my "poor" judgement of overwatch players i repeat, this is not MY ranking but rather a combination of rankings from different community members and pros (i did not have an impact on it) as i decided this would be the best way to rank pros in Overwatch

Good stuff!

Glad zunba got the love he deserved for an outstanding year.

Shame not to see more RunAway players after their strong S2 and S4 performances though.

are these rating based on results or individual skill, or a combination of both?

You’d need to ask people who gave me rankings but it’s in most cases combination of both and imo a really big part was impact they had on these results

hmm. Interesting list. Putting Zunba over Ryujehong is... odd.

I repeat myself but I didn’t rank these players

And here my opinion: I would put ryijehong even lower imo he is overrated and once ana was out of meta he wasn’t that impactful and him forcing ana instead of much stronger zen was bad for the team on more than one occasion (see for example first map of owwc 2017 against usa

as you can clearly see, no

again i did not rank this i just put the ranking i got into equation but
faze had very underwhelming year and while yes sdb is up there with the best skill wise he did not achieve anything in 2017 (http://liquipedia.net/overwatch/ShaDowBurn/Results look at the 2017) imo s4 is far less skilled then sdb and he also did not really achieve anything in 2017 (owwc and rumble may are the best but at rumble they got demolished by selfless carried by dafran http://liquipedia.net/overwatch/Surefour/Results)

Yea, but Birdring hasn't won anything as well: http://liquipedia.net/overwatch/Birdring/Results#Detailed_Results (I'm not saying he don't deserve top10, but it is all about individual performance I think) also you put Taimou pretty high, while he struggled so much in 2017.

birdring came 2nd and 3rd in the biggest tournament pre owl - apex as well as 2nd in seoul cup these ARE achievements to which s4 is no where close
and again i did not put anyone anywhere as i did not have slightest impact on this ranking

Remiska do u personally agree with all the rankings, would u change anything?

#18

i think it came out pretty good and i know my opinion would be biased so i didnt include it but:
id add dafran at 20th or 19th because he carried mediocre team (selfless) into being for some time best na team and the super aggressive style he brought became for some time na meta
ryu lower as he did not adapt well to meta after ana nerf
soon above flower as while flower is very skilled he did not achieve much (due to lack of tournaments in korea but still)
other than that its really good imo
