so recently i've upgraded all of my gear, including keyboard. without much research i purchased a razer mechanical keyboard, and that ended up having green switches. basically it's really loud and i won't be able to use it in future living arrangements with roommates.

that said, i really like the feel and accuracy, and would appreciate quiet mechanical keyboard suggestions based on personal experiences. razer seems good but doesn't look like they have quiet switches in any iterations

Razer keyboards are straight up overrated. Yea, they look cool, but green-switches, seriously? If you wanna buy a mech keyboard, look for these switches.

  • Blue: only if you're a typer, they're loud and clicky
  • Brown: soft/smooth and aren't annoying if you need to hold down W for a long time
  • Red: like brown but trades in a smooth feeling for a mechanical one, also has a textile bump

If you're looking for a shorter keypress and less stress, add O-rings.
68-key a.k.a 60% keyboards my personal size preference. I know it's getting a bit off-topic, but I highly recommend these for how much space they conserve for, say, your mousepad.

edit: got red and brown mixed up, thanks harsha

I have a G910 and it's not that loud. It's obnoxiously big though.

I used to have a Corsair Strafe with reds and I loved that keyboard, but wasn't quiet. I now have a Razer Blackwidow which is alright but wouldn't have been worth paying full price for

Recommend me a mechanical with a numpad and lights

G910 is pricey but completely customizable lighting and a numpad (and they got rid of the horrible keycaps)

edit: G910 orion spectrum specifically

Got one without all these pointless macros and gamer functions? :>

HyperX Alloy FPS, Logitech G610, Corsair K70, Logitech G413

The list can go on for quite a while tbh

I'm a little slow on the draw for this answer but this keyboard is excellent. https://www.amazon.ca/MasterKeys-Mechanical-Keyboard-Intelligent-Switches/dp/B01ITE93OM/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1500515521&sr=1-3&keywords=brown

white LEDs look gr8 too.

What type of switch are you looking for? Linear switches or tactile ones? There are lots of keyboards that I can recommend based on your switch type of preference. Razer also does have a silent variant of their green switches (razer orange switches), but they can sometimes be hard to find if you're looking for them at your local electronics store.

Also are you concerned about having a full size one? Or has the thought of the extra mousing space that you can get from a tenkeyless ever crossed your mind?

#5 I find it odd that you say that, since reds are typically regarded as the quietest switch out of the common switch types

Personally, I like my blackwidow chroma a lot especially with it's overwatch compatability. I have the green switches but I believe the oranges are significantly quieter and I'm pretty sure it comes in both versions.

yeah would like something condensed without numpad

i've read that the razer green switches i have are nearly identical to the cherry MX blue switches. though the blue are also clicky like someone mentioned.
cherry MX brown seem like the best alternative

will look into razer orange switches for sure. from what i read linear are for gaming and tactile for typing? in that case linear

this is the exact keyboard i mentioned in OP btw https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CVOLFUG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8
good aside from sound

It really depends on your typing/keypress style. If you constantly find yourself bottoming out your keystrokes, then it might be better to go with linear switches. If you prefer to feel for when the key actuates, then go with the silent tactile switches (cherry brown and razer orange)

Bought this few years ago, it really isn't loud and I'm sure I went for the silent keys plus I've spilt juice on the keys twice and everything still works, it has a numpad but no extra buttons, just a standard keyboard setup with RGB lights and cherry mx switches.

I would vote for Asus ROG Claymore, its good keyboard but heavily overpriced (~300€)

Apologies for the bump, but a few keyboards that you should look for depending on which switch type you end up deciding on

Razer:

Blackwidow Tournament Stealth Edition (only razer keyboard with orange/silent tactile switches)

Logitech (the Romer-G switches are a bit different from your standard cherry mx switches at first but with enough use you can easily get used to them):

G410 (This one has a more gamer-oriented look, and the keycaps do certainly show it. That being said, it's a solid budget alternative to the G Pro keyboard)
G Pro (The more expensive of the two logitech tenkeyless boards that I'd recommend, however just about everyone that I know that has bought one of these has loved it)

Corsair (These typically come with Cherry MX Red switches in them and overall Corsair boards are known for being rather premium in both design and price at times):

K65 (Comes in both gun metal grey and RGB variants, with the RGB variant obviously being a bit more expensive. The gun metal grey variant is known as the K65 Vengeance)
K63 (Basically just a k65 with red LEDs and dedicated media keys. Still a solid choice overall though)
Another thing to note: The K65 RGB and K63 do not have detachable USB cables as far as I'm aware, so if you plan on traveling a lot/taking your board with you to places, the K65 (Vengeance model) is likely better for you.

Cooler Master

Masterkeys Pro S (Detachable USB cable, RGB lighting, and a variety of switch types including brown, blue, and red)
Masterkeys Pro M (Only including this in the list because it's slightly more compact than a full size keyboard, but this certainly strikes a great medium between functionality and overall features if you plan on using this as more than just a gaming board)

There are tons more keyboards from other reputable keyboard manufacturers like ducky and filco, but their prices may vary from model to model in comparison to what you'd end up paying for a similar board from one of the companies listed above. That being said, hopefully these recommendations help :)

I would kill for a keypad or compact keyboard with cherry mx speed silver switches that is less than 150$.

Edit found one but it doesn't have leds.

I refuse to buy razer yellow even though its basically the same as mx silver because i have broken 4 razer mice in 2 years. Romer g looks nice but cherry mx speed silver is even faster.

I actually have a 60% board with my Anne Pro 2 but it will be a solid move for you to choose a ten-keyless. The perfect fit to any setup because you don't really need that numpad anymore. More space on your pad will be great. If you are open to changing how you use a keyboard a 65% or 60% board will be an amazing thing to get!
