Overwatch World Cup Brackets

I commented about it in this thread but I was wondering if anyone had a solid grasp on how Blizz is doing the Groups to Playoffs/QF shuffle.

My two pathetic attempts at it looked like this:

((A1 vs B2) vs (D1 vs C2)) vs ((F1 vs E2) vs (G1 vs H2))
vs
((B1 vs A2) vs (C1 vs D2)) vs ((E1 vs F2) vs (H1 vs G2))

OR

((A1 vs B2) vs (C1 vs D2)) vs ((E1 vs F2) vs (G1 vs H2))
vs
((B1 vs A2) vs (D1 vs C2)) vs ((F1 vs E2) vs (H1 vs G2))

I based those on the PlayOverwatch Here’s How We Play YT vid but it's confusing at best.

It doesn't change much but I would like to be able to better model the what ifs and such. Lemme know what you think.

Yeah I tried my best too. I don't know, I've seen several different variations so I guess we'll just have to wait and find out. Hope it works out in USA and Canada's favor though xD

We may have to, but not being able to theorize properly is hurting my soul, even if it has no actual meaning. IT HURTS MAN.

It''s difficult to tell. I don't really think the video was made with the bracket in mind. It's difficult to tell which one is supposed to be 1st and 2nd of each group on that video. At first, I thought the ones who end up on top are 1st place of each group as A1, B2, D1, and C4 were on top of B3, A3, C2, and D4. But for groups E-H, F and G are on top of E and H for all of the cases.

Exactly, though I think I'll probably be able to figure it out after this round's qualifiers.

With the completion of the Sydney group it looks like this is the format for the Qualifiers into the Blizzcon Playoffs:

((A1 vs B2) vs (C1 vs D2)) vs ((E1 vs F2) vs (G1 vs H2))
vs
((B1 vs A2) vs (D1 vs C2)) vs ((F1 vs E2) vs (H1 vs G2))

Going from that we could have the following match ups at Blizzcon if we assume the teams I prefer go through:

(China vs Sweden) vs (Korea vs Taiwan)
vs
(France vs Australia) vs (Canada vs USA)

This is assuming that Korea and Canada finish top of their groups and win their qualifiers. It also includes Taiwan and USA coming 1st and 2nd of their groups respectively with both winning their qualifier matches.

Purely for fantasy sake as these are the teams I'm generally biased towards but I'm interested to see what the final 4 spots actually end up being and if this was even remotely close to reality.

If Australia (blank) looked that good, and Taiwan (Flash Wolves) is better than them, I think they're a lock for Blizzcon, and of course I want USA to get through (and I think they will) but Germany, Israel, UK and Brazil all look like they could be surprisingly good.

From what I've been watching/reading the team i'm most worried about in the 8 I mentioned is Canada. I'm hoping those who showed that concern simple overestimated any issues the team might have and that they're able to make it through. If they do manage to end first in their group they're very likely to be facing the Netherlands which should also be a difficult match, on top of having to best Russian in their own group.

As for the other side of this possible QF, if the USA groups go as I'm imagining they will we might have a US(G2) vs UK(H1) qualifier on our hands.

A lot of possibilities, specially if we have as many surprises as with the Sydney group.

I'd be very surprised myself. I see them as possibly coming out on top of their group.

Scratch that, if they don't make it I'll write a minimum 1000 word editorial ranking teams by their rare flags

You should do that if they end up winning the OWC as well.

These are the current playoff brackets:

I believe who ever wins the G1 vs H2 match will play Korea and the winners of G1 vs H1 will play Canada. If things go as I think they might it would be Korea vs Taiwan and Canada vs USA if both manage to win their qualifier matches.

Not gonna lie, I'm rooting real hard for that Canada vs USA match here since I'd rather not see my southern brothers have to face Korea that early. That and we get to have another top 10 hocke...I mean great Overwatch match!

This is what I thought it would be, but how come the Blizzard page showing South Korea vs. Canada for the round of 8?
https://worldcup.playoverwatch.com/en-us#group-stage

I agree with you. I think having USA vs. Canada match would be interesting. I don't know whether what's on Blizzard page now is just an error or what because previous qualifiers from same group were placed on the opposite side (like China & France and Sweden & Australia).

It's broken, they didn't make the swap to the other side. I'm assuming they'll have it fixed eventually.

I'm seeing some rumblings on Reddit about a possible re-draw of the brackets once the 8 QF teams are known. I'm assuming it would redraw with the top seed facing the lowest seed and so on. I haven't seen confirmation for this anywhere and it would somewhat make sense if true but obviously people taker issue with it since USA might have faced off against SK right off the bat.

This is the Reddit thread:

I like double elims to cut to like 4 teams but not so much for Championship Finals. Basically how APEX does it.

Well now we know, brackets will be done by random draw, not seeding.

Our 8 teams by original seeding (has no bearing on QF brackets now that they'll be randomized)

  1. China
  2. Korea
  3. USA
  4. Sweden
  5. UK (6)
  6. Canada (7)
  7. France (8)
  8. Australia (13)
