Where did everyone place compared to last season? I peaked at ~3090 last season, ended at ~3029. Just went 7-3 in placements and placed 3210. Played support (Ana/Zen and Lucio once) for 9 of the 10 matches, and D.va once.
I went 10-0 in placements and was put at 4156.
Season 2 peak of 4059, ended at 3884.

I do expect that they're spreading out the ranks so there's more uniformity across everyone.
The reason why you get a similar placement to your season 2 mmr is the system is taking into account your s2 mmr before you even start your placement matches. This is so you get paired with/against people of similar skill in those matches. As a result, if you're a gold player you'll be playing with/against other gold players in your placement matches, so even if you do really well in your placements you are only doing that well against gold players. This is also why players like Iddq can go 2-6-2 and still place in GM, cuz even though he lost most of his placements he was losing them to other GM players
Here's a perspective from someone on the low side.
Placed 1985ish last season, high was 2029 (which was winning the first game immediately after placements), and then I fluctuated anywhere from 1650 (those were a bad couple of days) to 1900, finished at 1822.
For season 3, went 6-4 in placements. Was put at 1490. /sadtimes
I am getting more points for a win than points I'm losing for a loss, though, so that's new.
