Team flags

The flags should represent where the team is from, not where they're living. It doesn't make any sense. Envyus spent more time in Korea than in their gaming house so why didn't they get a Korean flag? It's just not a very good idea, I like this website a lot but it's always bugged me

It's based on the org location, not where they're living necessarily.
edit: im'm rertaded this is not true,...

That's the power of money in esports ¯_(ツ)_/¯

On this note, how come LG Evil and LG Loyal have different flags?

Right, so what the second guy said was false. You see how it can confuse people though? It should be where the team is from

EnVy have been in Korea to compete in APEX, but the players will soon return to their team facility in Charlotte - that is where they are based "normally".
Rogue are living together in Vegas now.

This honestly isn't that complicated it's where the team spends its time competing domestically.
The real shame here is the African flags that are missing from this site smh racist mods

Why would this be better than the current system

It makes more sense, every other website does it like that, someone who is new could easily get confused, the flag represent the TEAM, should be associated with the PLAYERS on the team not where they live

every other website does it like that

http://www.gosugamers.net/overwatch/rankings
http://wiki.teamliquid.net/overwatch/Category:American_Teams
https://www.plusforward.net/organization/24/Team-EnVyUs/

Okay minus gosu, those are pages about the org, the match ticker isn't showing a match between orgs its a match between teams

LG Loyal isn't a Canadian team. They are a European team. It doesn't matter if they live in Canada, they are not Canadian, so the flag used to REPRESENT LG Loyal should not be Canada

LG Loyal are living in Toronto and competing in the North American region. What is hard to understand about that?

You can even see the players individual nationality flags in the roster :D

The team flag actually adds some context in all these situations!

? Nothing is hard to understand about it, did I come off as confused at any point here?

The flag is representing the teams playing. Lets say a Korean team relocated to Germany and competed in Europe. Regardless of where they live and compete they are Koreans playing on a team, they are a Korean team. If they had a match displayed on here against a Russian team, they don't become a German team, no matter what way you look at it, no matter where they are located it is a Korean team vs a Russian team, so logically the flags should represent that.

None of the original LG Loyal members even remain in the roster anymore

If I imported 6 individual EU players to NA and make a team with them are they a EU team or a NA team? :D

Well if the Korean teamed moved to Germany itd be to compete in the German/EU scene. So theyd be a team based in Germany/EU, competing in German/EU tournaments, so one could argue a German team. No professional sports teams base there country of origin off the ethnicity of their players.

#19

that actually is the weird line because it seems acceptable to have the NA flags for LG and Rogue but imagine if an NA team moved to Europe to compete, it just wouldn't feel the same to see them with a U.K. flag or wherever they were located.

Most of this flag stuff started out with teams like envy, faze and fnatic where it was confusing what to label them as because in faze and fnatic' case half the team was NA and half was EU but in envy's case only one player was NA the rest were EU. The most logical way to label the teams then was by where they were located or where they competed in. This is why fnatic, faze and envy all have NA flags. This later applied to other EU teams like LG and Rogue as they moved to NA to compete in the region.

I used to think the same way and have the same logic, but its wrong. They are not an NA team, they are an EU team competing in NA :D

If they went back to EU does that change them and make them an EU team then? Or would they completely split up because they're an NA team and they can't be an NA team in EU!!

All jokes aside, the flag REPRESENTING them should be corresponding to the players, the players make the team not the place they live or the org they represent. If it were profiles on the orgs with the current roster underneath like Liquidpedia does than it would make more sense and i think thats where your mind is at, but its not, its a match ticker. Like you said, it shows their individual flags, so how does Canada represent France Finland UK and Belgium? And what about teams that don't have a gaming house, wouldn't it be the flag of the country where the majority of the players are from? Why does it change to where they live when they get a house

You seem to be ignoring that Overwatch has been effectively region locked for all major tournaments to date.
Teams have quite literally been forced to choose which region they represent.

Where teams reside has actually been more important than the median value of the players' nationalities.

We saw NA and EU qualifiers for the Atlantic Showdown and Overwatch Open. A few teams even switched regions between the two tournaments.

The new Rogue roster were not invited to MLG Vegas despite being an organisation based in Vegas because their players were not residing in NA (something that didn't seem to matter for half of FaZe and Fnatic?!)

EU teams were were not invited to to play in NGE's Winter Premiere, but in the eyes of tournament organisers LG (which you would deem an EU team) were eligible.

If you live in NA and are deemed to be an NA team by tournament organisers/Blizzard then are you not a NA team?

And you seem to be ignoring the fact that i'm talking about the match ticker lmao.

It does not matter what region they compete in

The flag represents the team, not the region, not where they live, not the org (before you tell me otherwise, it says the team name right next to flag, that's representation in the most literal sense)
The team is made up of players,
None of the players that make up the team being represented by the Canadian flag are from Canada,
It doesn't make sense.

Regarding the team flags we have just been following the status quo in Overwatch and we try to apply it fairly consistently.

I do still believe that EnVy, Rogue, LG, etc are EU teams and agree with the arguments laid out by Sideshow here https://www.over.gg/2936/editorial-envyus-and-rogue-are-european-teams

But it's still fun to play devil's advocate. It even goes some way to illustrate that any system one imposes is ultimately arbitrary.
Do you actually think there is any difference which system is used when both can be argued for fairly logically?

Will the Miami Misfits be a European team or a team of Europeans?
The only situation where it matters is when artificial tournament rules or league structures are imposed.

Pretty sure everyone's perceptions will switch to player nationalities when most tournaments, or major ones at least, are LANs or not region locked based on where the team lives.

i think one is more logical than the other

a European team and a team of Europeans is the same thing, a European team can play/compete in NA. That doesnt make them an NA team. That makes them a European team competing in NA. Pretty simple. Team representing major cities in OWL could complicate things, but I remember when the Misfits Rogue LG deal happened, on twitter I remember people (I think Jason Kaplan may have been the one who mentioned it) Talking about "Stockholm Misfits" So i don't think its set in stone on whether the major city will be one that corresponds with the players or the org, I guess we will just have to wait and see.

a European team and a team of Europeans is the same thing

EnVyUs isn't a european org though. team refers to the organization, and the players are only the sum of its parts. when you refer to envyus you're not referring to taimou, cocco etc, you're referring to an american esports team/organization founded in 2007, that just happens to be represented by european players in OW at the moment

well no when I say envyus when referring to overwatch I am taking about the team (taimou, cocco) not the org. You would say the organization envyus is really good at overwatch, you say team envyus is really good at overwatch.

why not replace team flags with their logo? or have the flag shown be that of the league they're playing in?

When the Blizzard league has franchises across the world then flags to represent where teams play would make sense (players usually get their own little flags).
